In order that Israel would not forget the miraculous parting of the Jordan river, God instructed them to erect a 12-stone memorial.  Twelve tribal representatives were selected to return to the middle of the river and bring back one stone each.  Joshua then set up the stones in Gilgal to serve as a monument to the power of God and to provoke stories in future generations (Josh. 4:1-24).
